Filmmaker Prashanth Neel is completely shifting gears for his next massive project.
The mastermind behind the K.G.F. franchise and Salaar has revealed that his upcoming collaboration with NTR Jr, titled Dragon, will be his absolute “biggest attempt at making a patriotic movie.” Scheduled for a June 2027 release, the film aims to reframe audience expectations by blending high-octane action with deep historical stakes.
The promotional glimpse for Dragon has already set social media on fire, racking up over 49 million views within just two days of its release on the eve of NTR’s birthday.
The Historical and Criminal Backdrop
Dragon introduces a fascinating and gritty historical premise:
- The Opium Empire: The plot establishes that British colonial rule in India was heavily sustained by its absolute dominance over the global opium trade—controlling a staggering 95% of the market through operations in Afghanistan and the Golden Triangle.
- The 1947 Fracture: When the British exited India in 1947, this massive criminal empire fractured into two warring factions: the Afghan Trading Company and the Golden Trading Company. This bitter divide serves as the central conflict of the movie.
What Lies Ahead for Neel
Beyond Dragon, Neel shared an exciting roadmap for his filmmaking future:
- Salaar Sequel Next: Fans of Prabhas won’t have to wait indefinitely. Neel confirmed that the highly anticipated Salaar sequel will plunge right into production the exact moment Dragon wraps up.
- A Shift to Mythology: After dedicating years to massive action blockbusters, Neel plans to eventually step away from the genre. He intends to focus on a passion project he has been quietly developing for roughly two decades: an ambitious mythological series.
