As filmmaker James Gunn and DC Studios prepare for the July 2025 release of a brand-new Superman film, the legendary superhero is making a triumphant return to the big screen. With Henry Cavill formally passing on the cape and leaving the title character, this represents a new chapter in the franchise.

The director hinted to Variety in April 2023 that the search was underway for a replacement for Lois Lane and Man of Steel, and that the next Superman needed to be “someone who you want to give a hug” and have “humanity.” Following the announcement of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as the leads, Gunn praised his new Clark Kent.

The new movie “focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” according to Safran’s earlier statement. “Superman stands for justice, truth, and the American way,” he continued. In a society that views kindness as outdated, he is kindness.
